Our Story
Why We Started
Be part of something beautiful.
Our Founding Story
Every community deserves access to the kind of music that changes the air in a room — the kind that asks everyone present to breathe together.
Tampa Bay is home to thousands of musicians who trained in school orchestras and college ensembles, who played in pit orchestras and church choirs, who practiced scales and arpeggios for years because the music mattered to them. And then life happened. Careers, families, relocations — the instrument went into the closet, the voice went quiet, and the part of themselves that made music went dormant.
Suncoast Masterworks exists to wake that part back up. We are founding a community orchestra and choir in St. Petersburg, Florida, because we believe that great music deserves to be made by the people who live here — not just consumed, but created together.
This is not a casual jam session. The name Masterworks means something. We will rehearse seriously, prepare diligently, and perform repertoire that challenges and rewards our musicians. But excellence here is not a gate — it is a direction. All experience levels are welcome — some of our members have performed professionally, others in church ensembles and community groups, and some simply for the love of music. The only requirement is a genuine love for great music and a willingness to show up, listen, and grow alongside the people in the chairs and on the risers next to you.
Our founding mission is simple: to create a performance home for passionate musicians in this community who want to play or sing at a high level but do not have a regular outlet. A place where the music is the vehicle and the community is the destination. Great Music. Greater Community.
Founding Artistic Director
Phillip Hubler
Phillip Hubler is the Founder and Conductor of Suncoast Masterworks, a community orchestra and choir dedicated to building connection, belonging, and artistic excellence through music.
Inspired by the many talented musicians and singers who lack opportunities to perform in a welcoming and meaningful environment, Phillip founded Suncoast Masterworks to create a place where people can grow, contribute, and experience the joy of making music together.
Phillip's background includes serving as a music teacher, school music director, church music and choir director, theater music director, and concert producer. He has led ensembles, organized public performances and toured nationally as a choir member.
His vision for Suncoast Masterworks is simple: to create a musical home where people feel seen, valued, and inspired while sharing exceptional musical experiences with the community.
His hope is that every person who joins the organization not only grows as a musician but also finds meaningful friendships, artistic fulfillment, and a true sense of belonging.
